Jamie-Lee Best – ‘Abandoned’

This project focuses on buildings that have been abandoned. I wanted to uncover their beauty, history and the stories behind them. I also wanted to show the age and history of the buildings to help tell a story. I found that colour images felt clumsy and cluttered so chose to shoot in black and white because you can see more detail. It also reduces the buildings to an emotion and feeling rather than a landscape photograph. I want these photographs to show what you might be feeling when you look at an abandoned building, such as coldness, emptiness and the feeling of being unsettled and alone. I want my photographs to make people feel the way they would feel as if they were standing at the site of the building themselves instead of looking at a photograph.

All the buildings photographed are based in the west coast of Cumbria and range from houses and schools to factories. I have investigated and photographed six abandoned buildings.
